A Thai para-athlete and ex-soldier committed suicide after shooting his bride, mother-in-law and sister-in-law on their wedding day.


According to preliminary details, the Thai groom killed three other people including the bride on his wedding day.


Chitrong Sisak, 29, and Kanchana Pichonthok, 44, were married on Saturday in northeastern Thailand.


According to reports, he suddenly disappeared from the wedding ceremony and appeared shortly after with a gun and shot dead his wife, her 62-year-old mother and her 38-year-old sister.


The bullets also hit two wedding guests, who were taken to hospital. One of them also died.


Police told the BBC that Chitrong was 'intoxicated at the time' but it is not yet clear why this happened. According to the police, Chitrong had bought the gun and bullets legally last year.


According to Thai media, some of the guests involved in the wedding ceremony have also told the police that 'the ceremony was going on and during that time there was an argument between the couple.' Further, 'Chitrong had expressed his displeasure about the age difference between himself and Kanchana and when none of his own paid attention to it, he decided to end the matter and it took extreme steps.

Chitrong was on duty as a paramilitary light infantry force patrolling the borders of Thailand, and suffered a broken right leg after being injured while on duty.


Although mass shootings are rare, gun ownership is common in Thailand.


Last month, three people were killed in a shooting at a large shopping mall in Bangkok. After last October, a former police officer killed 37 children in a gun and knife attack at a nursery in northeastern Thailand.
